Glass by Thomas Fink

GLASS

Movie star frames
have no glass.

I drank water
out of the glasses
on your face

and saw your face
through a glass on the table.
How many eyeballs?
Let me see in your lenses

if you're really here.
See the hammock
up high in the trees.
I think a bird made it.
Or it's the moon.
                                                                                                ――from After Taxes

The Shop Across the Street by SANDY McINTOSH

First it was a shoe shop.
      The shoemaker so poor,
He slept on the floor
      and resoled customer’s shoes
with cardboard.

*

When it was a clothing store
     The young owner
decorated her window
     with grace and invention,
one spring hanging a sign
     “Just Married!”
and posing manikins
       as bride and groom
holding pictures
       of her own wedding.
Another spring
       her sign read:
“It’s a boy!”and she dressed
       Her manikins
in blue
      surrounding them
with toys.
     For Halloween,
She costumed the manikins
     with sinister masks.
But in December,
     when she dressed them
in Christmas finery,
     she neglected to remove
the sinister masks—
      which troubled us
as we ate our breakfast
      and watched
from the caféacross the street.
      Later, she hung a sign:
“Divorced. Closing Store .”
      She’d stripped the window
and abandoned the manikins
      to their nakedness.
Under the stark
      neon streetlamp
they glared at us:
      Arctic snow.

*

Now the shop
      Is run by a man
selling buttons.
      He has swiveling reptilian eyes
And dresses formally,
      a lengthy metal chain
from a window curtain
      as a watch fob
on his polka-dotted vest.

DEPARTURE FROM A DEAD by Thomas Fink

       end,
sez you,
is going
to be ex-
orbitant.
Indifference
has been felt as hostility, leading to digital canards
that trickle into more holes than major agencies
                                   can track.But
hasn't languor-
ous coexistence without eye          contact flown
in some healthy suburbs? Ex-          clusion acts
have always
    proven un-
American. They pleasure us with the buzz
of historical condescension. And the fresh
resurgence of
disbelief in
military
solutions
might or
might not
make in-
clusion acts
palatable
in some
swing states.
We should be
scratching for
rational self-
defense with-
out reactionary
budgets. An old-
boy imagination's
cell is not easy
to outsmart.

HOME by Thomas Fink

That was a good motel,
But now we’re home.
Shut up your terribleness now
because I have a sleeping contest.

Sorry.
I can’t force you.

What kind of life?
It’s resting in the egg.

Is she dead?
Scarab beetle.
